**The monthly charge does not include shipping or sales tax. There will be a one time charge for shipping prior to your annual shipment, and sales tax will be added to your monthly charge based on the rates for your state, if applicable.
As a small winery and working farm with our own restaurant, we are positioned to be a force for ecological change. Along with language, food forms the foundation of culture. Every society’s cuisine has its origins in a specific way of farming. It’s easy to lose sight of this in the technologically disconnected reality of the modern world, but this is how we are connected to nature: by the path between what we eat and how we farm.
Our greatest hope for living happier, healthier lives, for solving the problems we’ve created in the natural world, lies in embracing the power latent in our relationship with food. Wonderfully, it may be through the joy of eating and drinking that we find a sustainable path to care for the world. Each change in farming practice has an impact on the flavor of our food. Farming in a way that brings us closer to nature has a specific taste, and if we can harness this potential, we can make the world more delicious as we make it a better place for all creatures to inhabit.
As we develop new ways to care for our land, it opens up creative opportunities in the kitchen and cellar. Meaning and community emerge from these flavors at the table and create a connection to our land that wouldn’t be possible from farming alone. Care for the land emerges from this connection, and it has the power to make our farming innovations more durable, lasting, and profound. It’s our goal to make lasting change in the way we farm, eat, drink, and gather and from this to better care for our world. Your support as a member of the Understory helps us make this possible.
Frequently Asked Questions
When you join the Understory, you commit to a minimum one-year subscription. This allows you to experience a holistic selection of our wines and your subscription benefits. If you cancel your subscription prior to one year, you will be responsible for reimbursing Hiyu for any Understory discounts received.
We ship once a year in the fall to all fifty states via a temperature controlled carrier. We will notify you of your shipping date one month in advance. At this point it is important to let us know if your address has changed, or if you have any dates when you will not be home to receive your shipment. This is also a great moment to add additional wines to your order. We also offer pick up at the farm by appointment. We do not currently offer international Understory subscriptions.
We offer pickups of your Understory bottles and web purchases Wednesday through Sunday from 11am – 3pm. All pickups require a reservation with at least 24 hours advance notice. Please email understory@hiyuwinefarm.com to reserve your pickup time. If you book a lunch or dinner at the farm we will automatically prepare your pickup for you.
We ship Understory Subscriptions once a year in the fall via refrigerated carrier. If you have ordered additional bottles we can either consolidate them with your fall shipment or ship them at the time of your order as weather allows. Please email us at orders@hiyuwinefarm.com if you have any questions about the precise date your subscription will ship.
Understory subscriptions are processed monthly. This payment plan supports all of our endeavors at Hiyu, where animals, fields, and vine sites must be tended to from dusk to dawn, every day.
